About the Zone Diet


Barry SearsThe Zone diet, popularized by biochemist Barry Sears, advocates consuming calories from carbohydrates, protein, and fat in a balanced ratio. The diet centers on a 40:30:30 ratio of calories obtained from 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fats. The Zone Diet has been shown to reduce body fat while gaining muscle mass. The plan is also reported to be easy to adjust to with the fewest adverse effects such as fatigue or hunger. Later Zone Diet books suggested intake of a particular ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids.

The official Zone website describes the program with the following, "The Zone 1-2-3 Program is based on the principle of hormonal balance. Once you achieve that balance, you will burn fat faster, have freedom from hunger, and reduce cellular inflammation that drives weight gain. The reason that we gain weight is because the hormones generated by the foods we eat are out of balance; not lack of willpower."
