Paleo Diet
About the Paleo Diet
The Paleo Diet (short for Paleolithic Diet) is also referred to as the "Caveman Diet" or "Hunter-Gatherer Diet" because it is based on the eating patterns of ancient hunter gatherer ancestors. The foods they consumed were hunted or gathered and were readily available in nature.
Allowed foods on the Paleo Diet include:
- Lean meats
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Fruits and vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
Foods allowed in moderation include:
- Oils (4 tablespoons or less per day): olive, avocado, walnut, flaxseed, canola
- Beverages: diet sodas, coffee, tea, wine, beer, spirits
- Paleo sweets: dried fruits, nuts mixed with dried fruits
Foods to avoid on the Paleo Diet:
- Dairy products: butter, cheese, milk, ice cream, yogurt
- Cereal grains: barley, millet, oats, rice, rye, wheat
- Legumes: beans, chickpeas, peanuts, lentils, peas, peanut butter, miso, soybeans
- Starchy vegetables: sweet potatoes, yams, potatoes, tapioca
- Salty foods: bacon, processed meats, salami, hot dogs, olives, ketchup
- Fatty meats: beef ribs, t-bone steaks, pork ribs, lamb
- Sugar soft drinks and fruit juices
- Sweets: candy, honey, sugars
