About a High Protein Diet
A diet high in protein has been used in weight training and by bodybuilders for years to build muscle and lose fat. However, more and more weight loss diets are recommending higher levels of protein from lean sources. Many believe this diet will change a person's metabolism as the body begins burning its own fat. Dieters tend to feel fuller longer when including more protein with meals. Some high protein diets are high in saturated fat and low in fiber, which can raise cholesterol along with the risk of stroke and heart disease. People should not follow a high protein diet for more than 3-4 months and persons with kidney disease should not attempt weight loss via a high protein diet at all. The American Heart Association does not recommend high protein diets for weight loss.
