About the Atkins Diet

AtkinsThe Atkins Diet, or Atkins Nutritional Approach, has been around since the 1970s, when Dr. Robert Atkins first published his diet plan suggesting low-carb eating which he used to resolve his own overweight condition. The diet restricts carbohydrates in order to switch the body from burning glucose to burning stored body fat in the process called ketosis.

The Atkins Diet consists of four phases:
  • Induction - Carbohydrates are restricted to a maximum of 20 net grams per day for a period of about 2 weeks to quickly enter a state of ketosis. The most significant weight loss is usually seen during this phase.
  • Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) - Carbohydrates are increased, but still kept at a level where weight loss occurs. This phases lasts until weight is within 10 pounds of the target weight.
  • Pre-Maintenance - Carbohydrates are again increased but only to the level for maintaining current weight.
  • Lifetime Maintenance - This phase carries on the habits learned in the previous phases. If you begin to gain weight, it is suggested to drop back to an earlier phase.
